LISTEN: Extra! Extra! hosts talk journalism and mental health

Provincetown Banner - 8/30/2017

Extra! Extra! Podcast hosts Caitlyn Kelleher and Joy Richard do a deep dive on mental health and how journalists deal with the more troubling and tragic stories they cover during the course of their careers.

For their fifth episode, the pair discusses the toll that working in print, or the media as a whole, takes on a writer.

Richard and Kelleher use the article, "When Being a Journalist is Terrible for Your Mental Health," by journalist and long-time writer Philip Eil. Found on Tonic, part of the Vice network, the piece dissects how writers and reporters have a tendency to feel as though their feelings about a story shouldn't matter, or don't compare to what their sources have had to go through personally.

"It felt like the parts of my brain that contain motivation, energy, and the ability to arrange ideas had been injected with Novocaine," wrote Eil, as he spoke about the feeling of "burnout" after years of working in newsrooms and writing highly emotional pieces.
