Wreaths placed: Cadets honor veterans at ?Wreaths Across America'

Spooner Advocate - 12/21/2017

SPOONER? Our veterans have served this country proudly for many generations. And on Saturday, Dec. 16, a group of young soldiers made sure that their dedication and sacrifices were not forgotten at Christmas.

Displaying the dedication and patriotic spirit of seasoned soldiers, the young cadets from the Wild Rivers Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, stationed in Hayward, marched through the deepening snow at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner with wreaths and rifles and respect.

The Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Spooner participated in National Wreaths Across America Day with ceremonies to honor and remember the nation's veterans. The nationally coordinated wreath-laying ceremonies took place simultaneously at more than 1,200 locations throughout the U.S. at 11 a.m. CST on Saturday, Dec. 16.

Following a brief ceremony inside the chapel, nearly 450 donated wreaths were placed on the gravesites.

The ceremony inside honored veterans of each military branch, the Merchant Marines, prisoners of war, and those missing in action.

In 2016, the Worcester Wreath Company laid more than 1.2 million wreaths at 1,228 participating locations in all 50 states and overseas.
