Remembering Hometown Heroes Clarks Summit Borough honoring veterans with Hometown Heroes Banner Program

The Abington Journal - 4/10/2018

CLARKS SUMMIT — The borough has announced its Hometown Heroes Banner Program.

Visiting Angels of Lackawanna County has been working alongside the borough since September 2017. The committee consists of Clarks Summit Mayor Herman Johnson, Council President Gerrie Carey, Councilman Patrick Williams and Visiting Angels representative Cyndi Coleman, RN BSN.

The program serves as a tribute to recognize past and fallen men and women from Clarks Summit Borough who have served our country in the armed forces. In order to participate, heroes must have been a resident of Clarks Summit Borough for 25 years.

The banners are 30” wide by 60” tall. Each individual banner will honor a specific Clarks Summit service man or woman and will include his or her picture, branch of service, and era of service. Sponsors who may be friends, families or businesses will pay for the Hometown Heroes Banner. Sponsorship will be named on the banners.

The banners will be displayed on the PPL poles around Clarks Summit Borough from Memorial Day 2018 until Veterans Day 2018 after which time the banner will be returned to the sponsor. There is no guarantee as to the life of the banner.

Dedication will take place on Memorial Day, May 28, following the parade at the VFW on Winola Road. There will be a second opportunity to purchase a Hometown Hero Banner to be hung for Flag Day, June 14. Those flags will remain hung through Veterans Day (Nov. 11). The deadline for the second order of banners is April 30.

For next year and years to come, the borough plans to increase the number of PPL poles to be utilized for the Hometown Heroes Banners. At this time, the borough is only approved for 22 poles.

Collection for Hometown Heroes Banners for 2019 will begin Jan. 9.

The cost of $250 for sponsorship from friends, families or businesses includes the banner, fixtures, shipping, handling, taxes and rental of a bucket truck.

The borough is only able to accept the first 44 applications until April 30 and applications will only be processed with a fully completed application, photo, DD214 form and a check or money order made payable to Clarks Summit Hometown Heroes.

For applications, visit the Clarks Summit Borough Building, 304 S. State St.
