Nye to be honored as Veteran of the Year

Sept. 22--HILLSDALE -- The Jonesville American Legion Post 195 recently released the name of this year's Veteran of the Year, who will be honored during Veterans and Children's Day at the 168th Hillsdale County Fair on Monday.

This year's Veteran of the Year recipient is Michael Nye, of Litchfield, runner-up was James Cramer, of Waldron. Both men will be honored during this year's ceremony at 11:15 a.m. Monday at the Nichols Bandshell at the Hillsdale County Fairgrounds.

Nye has been a member of the Hillsdale American Legion for 36 years and Cramer is a life member of the Waldron VFW Post 15191. Cramer has been a consistent member of the VFW for 12 years and has held the position of trustee within the post.

Nye served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1971 as quartermaster attaining the rank of E5 and is eligible for National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, as well as Vietnam Campaign Medal. He received his law degree from University of Detroit in 1974.

Cramer served in the U.S. Army from 1969-71 in the corps of engineers and was honorably discharged. He has earned the Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the National Defense Medal.

Gary Noblit, a member of the Jonesville American Legion Veteran of the Year committee said Nye has been extremely active in his community.

"He is a most honorable deserving man," Noblit said.

Nye served as a state representative from 1983-98 and as Hillsdale County Probate Judge for several years. He is active in the Exchange Club, Hillsdale County Fair Board, Habitat for Humanity and various other organizations.

Noblit said that Cramer is also very active in his community organizing several activities throughout the year

"James' commander simply said, James is always ready to do what is asked," Noblit said.

Special to this year's Veteran of the Year ceremony will be the unveiling of a new monument dedicated to those veterans who have been honored since 1964.

The monument is being constructed by Dominik Balser, a local student who is working on his Eagle Scout project. The names of those honored will be inscribed on 30mm rounds and incased in the monument.

Veterans or active soldiers with identification receive free entry into the fair on Monday.

Noblit encourages members of the community to come out and support these veterans during the service.
