Geauga Veterans Sports Fest scheduled for Sept. 10

News-Herald - 9/8/2022

Sep. 8—Seven veterans organizations will gather to host the fourth annual Geauga Veterans Sports Fest this weekend.

The fest is scheduled for Sept. 10 at Great Lakes Outdoor Supply in Middlefield, located at 14855 N. State Ave. Gates will open at 3 p.m. Tickets, which are on sale now, offer opportunities to win more than 50 items including sporting equipment and gift cards. Food and entertainment such as axe throwing and the challenge games will be available to spectators.

The theme for the festival this year is "Honoring the Greatest Generation."

"The festival is an opportunity to view equipment from the Ohio Army National Guard, as well as meet and greet veteran organizations," said Mike Warner of the Combat Vets Motorcycle Association. "We've seen an overwhelming response from the community showing support for the Geauga veteran organizations."

The fest is free to attend, and raffle tickets purchased online will enter spectators into the 50-item raffle. In the event a ticket is chosen, a Geauga veterans representative will reach out.

In 2021, the event raised more than $100,000 and saw more than 100 winners. All proceeds will benefit the Chardon American Legion, Chardon VFW, Newbury American Legion, Middlefield VFW, Combat Vets Motorcycle Association, Valor Retreat and the U.S. Militia RC National Chapter. To sponsor this event, companies may donate $50 to $5,000. Each sponsorship offers an ad in the program guide for the event day, as well as visibility opportunities.

To mail a check for sponsorship, mail to VFW 9678, P.O. Box 534, Middlefield, Ohio 44062.

To conclude the fest, a fireworks show will be presented around 8 p.m. Guests will be able to watch the display in the Great Lakes Outdoor parking lot.

"I encourage folks to attend this event," Warner said. "Our opening ceremony will honor some local World War II veterans and we'll be supporting the Amish community, and local vendors."
